The Theology Conference

I'm back! Didya miss me? Huh? Huh?
Some great things about the conference:
1. Seeing my best friend, Armida, and drinking lots of pumpkin spice lattes with her. Man, I miss that girl.
2. Meeting a blogging friend. Erin has a creative sense of humor and a creative bent on raising children. Armida and I tried to convince her to write a book on child-rearing (such a funny word, don't you think? makes me think of butts). I'll need her ideas someday. Oh, we met at Cheesecake Factory where they currently have this amazing pumpkin cheesecake. Can ya see a theme here?
3. Discovering new favorite theologians, like John Franke. This guy has some great ideas. Can't wait to dig into the new book I just bought, which brings me to point 4...
4. New books at half the price. You heard right, folks, half the price. Publishing houses galore in the exhibition room. My eyes went starry. My heart went pitter-patter. My throat begin to constrict in excitement. And my husband put me on a budget. (Well, he threatened to.) So I bought all these smarty-pants nonfiction books so that I can use big words like prologomena.
5. Walking down to the White House at night and discovering that it is exactly how I described it in my book (wshoo!).
I had a great time. It was good to be back in that theological world. Thankfully, Armida was there. She's brilliant, and I kept bugging her with, "What does that mean again?" Man, you're out of the system for a couple of years and who knows what's going on.

Twitchin' with envy....and I'm not even sure why....

Glad you had a great time!

Bottom line in my neck of the woods...the tyranny of the urgent :/ (laughing, but it sure is with a BIG sigh....).

What the heck is a theology conference??

If I write a parenting book, you have to write a book on the Theology of Pumpkin Spice. I think both would be just about as valuable to the world at large. I'll buy yours if you'll buy mine.

Are you implying that we're going to need a Bible dictionary and concordance to read your blog now? (You're already walking the line, girl.) Where's the half price book table when I need it?!

Cool girls graduate from seminary.

All that talk about half-price theology books and, other than John Franke, you didn't say which ones you bought? It's great to know lovers of fiction are also passionate about theology. Now, who else is on the docket?

Robin, a theology conference is a bunch of nerds, mostly seminary and university professors plus some pastors and other scholars, getting together to give/listen to papers, hob-nob and suck up. Since I no longer live in that world, I had no need to dress my best to impress. In fact, when one guy said something I didn't agree with at all in his paper, I gave him the evil eye. In all seriousness, it's a great place to dialogue with what is going on in the theology world, to learn new things, which is why I went.
Other books (I don't have them here because they're being shipped, so I'll have to remember): a commentary put together by the top African scholars (I need some balance for my western interpretations); Reel Spirituality (subtitled Theology and Film in dialogue) by Robert Johnston; From Homer to Harry Potter: A Handbook on Myth and Fantasy by Matthew T. Dickerson and David O'Hara; and a book by Barth. I think that might be it. I also wanted to get this book by Myron Penner, but I was trying to be budget-nice.

Oooh, yes, half price new books. I'd be gaga too. I have found this new overstock bookstore here, and they have some great books--for $3 or $4, or if I'm lucky on the $1 cart in back. . . . They aren't new, which is fine, but new, current, hip books for half price. . . .

I'm heading to the DC area for Thanksgiving with my in-laws this weekend.
